It’s been over a year since Iggy Azalea released a follow-up single to “Team” from her indefinitely delayed sophomore album Digital Distortion. “Team” was well received by critics but didn’t do so well commercially as it failed to chart in the top 40. She’s had a tough year, which included a very public breakup with her ex-fiancé Nick Young. Now, Iggy is back with a new single called “Mo Bounce.” She officially premiered the song on Apple Music’s Beats 1 station with Zane Lowe. “It’s probably the most fun record on my album,” she told Lowe. “I just want to twerk in a video.”
I agree that the song is very catchy, but the material is nothing that we haven’t heard or seen from Iggy before. “Mo Bounce” is pretty much a rework of her previous singles “Bounce” and “Work.” In the music video, she and a few friends are twerking all over Hong Kong.
I don’t think this is the comeback single that any of us really had in mind. But I think it’s just what Iggy is most comfortable with. It’s a fun club anthem with a techno/hip-hop vibe that usually works for her. I’m hoping Iggy will rap about more personal stuff and maybe experiment with some new sounds on this album. Will she reign in 2017? We’ll just have to wait and find out.
