Just when we thought our little hearts couldn’t bear the pain of a no longer existent One Direction, Harry Styles swooped in and saved the day. Early this morning Harry released his first single off of his first ever studio album. The song is called, “Sign of the Times,” and it’s basically so incredible and monumental that every soul walking the earth will now self-identify as a “Harry Girl.”
Perhaps the most noticeable difference between Harry’s new song and what we’ve heard from One Direction in the past is that it’s actually very deep, dark and meaningful. I’m not denying that One Direction didn’t get us into our feels from time to time, but this song is loaded with perfectly crafted lyrics and beautiful metaphors that show us just how much Harry’s really grown since the band’s first hit single, “That’s What Makes You Beautiful”… which is still a total jam, by the way!
The 70’s-inspired instrumental behind “Sign of the Times” is comprised mostly of heavy piano, but overall, it’s really seems to embody and refurbish rock music from several decades ago. The chorus is where the song really shines as Harry jumps up into his flawless falsetto and stuns us with the incredibly angelic voice we always knew he had (you know… the voice that constantly outshined his fellow band mates).
It’s also important to note that the lyrics of the song are just so intelligent and thought provoking that it actually kind of makes sense now why One Direction had to fall apart. Harry is simply too good to be one of five heartthrobs on stage, melting into one another. With lyrics like, “you can’t bribe the door on your way to the sky/ you look pretty good down here/ but you ain’t really good,” the song absolutely deserves to be center-stage and nominated at next year’s Grammy ceremony. I know, I know… I’m way ahead of myself, but the song is just that good. Seriously, give it a listen and let us know what you think!
