Oh, how lucky are we! On Wednesday, Tony-winning Hamilton producer Jeffrey Seller announced that playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda would return to the hit show in January 2019. Miranda will reprise his title role of Alexander Hamilton for a limited time in an effort to provide his native island of Puerto Rico with economic relief due to Hurricane Maria.
Both Miranda and Seller hope that the 3-week run at the University of Puerto Rico’s Teatro (theatre) will prompt tourism to the island. Hurricane Maria left the theatre’s roof severely damaged, and it is set to receive repairs before the show’s opening. In an attempt to provide the island’s locals with an opportunity to see the show, many tickets will be sold for just $10.
Miranda commented on the significance of bringing his show to his homeland and said, “One of the things that sort of grabbed me about Hamilton’s life story was that he was born in the Caribbean, and wrote about a hurricane that destroyed his island, and that’s what sent him to the main land. So the full circled-ness of bringing this show back to the Caribbean feels right.”
Bit of a day.
I have a year and a bit to remember the words.
