John Mayer’s “New Light” Brings Back the Old Him

As if 2018 hasn’t already given us some amazing music, John Mayer just released a new single called “New Light.” This is his first release since his album last year, The Search For Everything. Before this song, Mayer has quite literally been on the search for everything, which ranges from looking for the hottest wings on the planet to finding the perfect company to collaborate with for a shoe deal. These events have led John Mayer to something new, but on “New Light”, his lyrics are more of a return to the singer we all know and love.

The song was shared by Mayer on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 Radio show on May 10th, 2018 and has been stuck in our heads ever since. It was produced by John Mayer himself along with No I.D., a legendary hip-hop producer who has worked with rappers such as Kanye West, Vince Staples, and Jay-Z. The song is about John’s pursuit of possibly the only woman who is uninterested in him. Lyrics such as “Pushing 40 in the friend zone” and “You don’t think twice about me” showcases the lyricism that made everyone fall in love with him.

The chorus is about the singer begging this mystery woman to give him “just one night” so she might see him “in a new light.” The lyrics hit too close to home for people who have been chasing after someone who is either uninterested or just oblivious towards the affection. The best part of the song, however, is the trademark blues style along with the vintage, groovy beat. The song is fitting with the artwork of John wearing a jacket reminiscent of the 1980’s with the pastel background. A new John Mayer song is always great to hear, but an album would even better, especially if “New Light” will bring back the singer we all knew and loved during his first few albums.
