Look No Further! Here Are Our 2018 MTV VMA Predictions!

Wow, you guys! We’re less than one month away from one of music’s biggest nights, and we don’t know about you, but we can’t wait! The MTV Video Music Awards will air on Monday, August 20. Every year, the network honors the best music videos and fills the show with unforgettable performances and moments. With the ceremony taking place in New York City again, it’s likely going to be a big one. Of course, some of the biggest names in music are nominated, so it’s really hard to guess who’s going to take home a coveted Moonman. Still, we might as well try, so from our favorite rappers to the biggest pop stars, let’s predict who will be winning this year. Shall we?

Video of the Year

“No Tears Left To Cry” by Ariana Grande

Finesse” (Remix) by Bruno Mars feat. Cardi B

“Havana” by Camila Cabello feat. Young Thug

“Apes**t” by The Carters

“This Is America” by Childish Gambino

“God’s Plan” by Drake

Who Might Win: Gambino’s video was backed by a very important, special message. Drake also tugged at some heart strings with his video too. But with The Carters dropping a surprise album, it is hard to compete. They rented out The Lourve museum for the shoot…can anything really top that? The video is beautiful and this project was an incredible creative step for the husband and wife duo. The VMA’s tend to show Beyonc√© lots of love too.

Artist of the Year

Ariana Grande

Bruno Mars

Camila Cabello

Cardi B

Drake

Post Malone

Who Might Win: Although the males in the category had huge years, it really is the females we should betting on. Miss Grande’s new music to date has been perfection. But Cardi B and Cabello really stole the show this year. Cardi B’s success grew so rapidly and “Bodak Yellow” will be a classic years down the road. With her infamous catchphrases and crazy personality, our favorite girl from the Bronx will probably take this one home very easily.

Song of the Year

Finesse” (Remix) by Bruno Mars feat. Cardi B

“Havana” by Camila Cabello feat. Young Thug

“God’s Plan” by Drake

“New Rules” by Dua Lipa

“Perfect” by Ed Sheeran

“Rockstar” by Post Malone feat. 21 Savage

Who Might Win: All of these songs were ones that were hard to escape. Lipa’s rules started a revolution and Post Malone and Bruno Mars gave us some pretty great Instagram captions. Cabello’s “Havana” should win this category for a few reasons. The track was released in August 2017 as a promotional single before she even announced an album. Since then, the song has steadily been played on the radio, sold millions, broke streaming records, and been remixed. The song is a strong example of how to break off into solo stardom. The video is unique and fun and we have been humming along to it for about a year now. Cabello certainly deserves the trophy for this one. Her album is one of the best pop works of the year.

Best Collaboration

Finesse” (Remix) by Bruno Mars feat. Cardi B

“Apes**t” by The Carters

“Meant To Be” by Bebe Rexha feat. Florida Georgia Line

“Dinero” by Jennifer Lopez feat. DJ Khaled & Cardi B

“1-800-273-8255” by Logic feat. Alessia Cara & Khalid

“Lemon” by N.E.R.D feat. Rihanna

Who Might Win: Cardi B is the most nominated artist at this year’s VMA’s. With her name on the ballot twice in this category alone, she was the collab queen on 2018. “Finesse” was already one of the best tracks from Mars’ 24K Magic album and Cardi just made it even better. The 90s inspired video and Grammy performance helped put this song on the map. The duo, also heading out on tour together this fall, make for a near perfect R&B/hip-hop track. (Honorable mention: “Lemon” is a fantastic song that was an exciting comeback for Pharrell’s group.)

Best Pop Video

“No Tears Left To Cry” by Ariana Grande

“Havana” by Camila Cabello feat. Young Thug

“Sorry Not Sorry” by Demi Lovato

“What About Us” by Pink

“Perfect” by Ed Sheeran

“In My Blood” by Shawn Mendes

Who Might Win: 2018 was huge for pop as we got to see some great new music from so many of the artists we love. While we have to shout out the Canadian heartthrob Mendes for releasing another radio banger, it was the women that shined the brightest this year. Cabello’s telenovella video and Lovato’s wild house party were awesome video accompaniments. Grande’s “No Tears Left To Cry” was the strongest video and deserves to take home something this year. With the high production value (have you seen those graphics?) and overall addictive quality of the song, we are rooting for Grande. Her upcoming album, Sweetener, will come out days before the show is broadcast. Fingers crossed for a performance.
