Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga’s song “Shallow” is anything but. The brand new track serves as the forefront of the soundtrack for the duo’s new movie A Star Is Born, out in theaters this Friday. A snippet of the song first debuted in the original trailer for the film; however, it officially debuted on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio station. It was made available for purchase and released on all streaming platforms last Friday.
In the film, Cooper plays Jackson Maine, a famous musician who meets and falls in love with Ally, a struggling artist herself. The film follows their relationship as he helps ease her into the spotlight. “Shallow” is a duet between the two that is heavily featured in the film’s trailers.
“Shallow” opens with Cooper plucking an acoustic guitar and singing with a country twang. His verses are mellow and kick off the track with ease. He begins by asking, “Tell me something, girl//Are you happy in this modern world?//Or do you need more?//Is there something else you’re searching for?”
He then sings the refrain, “I’m fallin’//In all the good times//I find myself longin’ for change//And in the bad times, I fear myself.”
Lady Gaga answers him with a verse of her own. “Tell me something, boy//Aren’t you tired tryin’ to fill that void?//Or do you need more?//Ain’t it hard keepin’ it so hardcore?” She then sings the same refrain as Cooper.
After her refrain, Gaga’s voice booms on the chorus, “I’m off the deep end, watch as I dive in//I’ll never meet the ground//Crash through the surface, where they can’t hurt us//We’re far from the shallow now.” The two duet on the post-chorus together.
During the debut of the song on Beats 1 radio with Zane Lowe, Gaga commented on the significance and specialness of the track. “I worked on Shallow with Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt and Anthony Rossomando,” she said. “We made this song for Ally and Jack and it’s such a special song. It’s two people talking to each other about the need and the drive to dive into the deep end and stay away from the shallow area.”
“Shallow” is a beautiful song that is worthy of multiple listens. Gaga’s voice, in particular, shines through on the chorus; the emotion in her voice can be felt with each listen. It’s no wonder the film is already receiving Oscar buzz. Personally, we cannot wait to watch it.
