The good ole days of the ’90s are the spotlight of Charli XCX and Troye Sivan’s new collaboration, “1999,” where the pop duo delivers an extremely vibrant song with a nostalgic feel. When it was announced that the two would collaborate, we couldn’t wait to hear the product! The duo looked sleek and cool in the single’s cover art, resembling the 1999 film The Matrix.
As soon as you press play, you’ll be dying to dig up your baggy jeans and chokers from the back of your closet and blast this track on your Walkman. “I just wanna go back, back to 1999 // Take a ride to my old neighborhood // I just wanna go back, sing ‘Hit me baby, one more time,'” opens the song, subtly hinting at pop queen Britney Spears. This is only one of many late 90s/early 2000s references made throughout the song.
The song is a celebration of our past, and it’s here to feed our generation’s nostalgia obsession of 90s fashion and music. Back when MTV was just music and the boy bands stole everyone’s hearts…those were simpler times.
“1999” follows the recent release of Sivan’s record Bloom. Charli XCX is wrapping up her tour with Taylor Swift and recently released her Pop 2 mixtape.
There really could not have been a better pair to make a collaboration like this. Charli XCX is famous for her insane and inventive music. Sivan is an energetic newcomer to the scene. Together, they make a hella radical track. Hop in your time machine, and check out the song below!
