Although it’s hard to attempt to cover rock legends Queen and David Bowie, Shawn Mendes’ cover of classic rock hit “Under Pressure” with collaborator Teddy Geiger (who now goes by Teddy<3) left us pleasantly surprised. With Queen’s biopic Bohemian Rhapsody coming soon, this track is the first of many promotional covers and has us itching to hear the rest!
For those who may be skeptical about a young pop artist covering this song, do not worry. Mendes and Geiger definitely do it justice, even with their more stripped down version. Rather than taking the song and adding unnecessary dubs and beats, the two stuck to the original composition. The classic guitar sounds and minimal production keep it classic, while Mendes and Geiger lay some impressively strong vocals on the track. They even made sure to keep the famous ad-libs, which we think are necessary for a Queen cover.
Not only is this a song for both Mendes and Queen fans to enjoy, but all proceeds benefit the Mercury Phoenix Trust to fight HIV/AIDS. The highly anticipated film illustrating the story of Freddie Mercury and Queen will be out next month on November 2, and we couldn’t be more excited, especially with all of the other Queen covers on the way.
iHeartRadio just announced Mendes as a headliner at this year’s iHeartRadio Jingle Ball tour coming in late November. Dates can be found here and make sure to listen to the cover below.
