The 1975’s “It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You)” is an Ode to the Heartbroken

On October 18, The 1975 debuted their latest single off their upcoming album A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships due out on November 30. The latest single, which is the fifth song release off of the album, is called “It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You)” and debuted on BBC Radio 1. The band released this single just a few days after releasing the colorful music video for their prior single, “Love If We Made It.”

The song begins in that oh so familiar 1975-esque way, with a beat that really just makes you want to dance. If you listen closely, though, you’ll hear a story of someone who so badly doesn’t want to move on when a relationship has run its course. Frontman Matty Healy then takes it to another level, discussing substance abuse as a coping mechanism for dealing with a failed relationship and even strikes a parallel between the two.

“I can’t stop sweating or control my feet/ I’ve got a twenty-stone monkey that I just can’t beat/ I can stage a situation but I just can’t eat/ There’s a feeling you’re replacing embrace/ And it’s true that all I do is sit and think about you.”
