This is not the holiday gift Pearl Jam fans were hoping for. On December 27, 2018, Pearl Jam announced on their website that they would be discontinuing their Ten Single Club after the 2018 season. The Ten Club, Pearl Jam’s fan club, has given members exclusive singles since 1991. These singles have featured everything from Christmas songs to exclusive B-sides. 1994 was the only year in the over twenty five year long program that a single was not made. However, fans who have renewed for this year will still get either their digital or vinyl copy of 2018’s single.
The Ten Club was formed from the Mother Love Bone Earth Affair, a fan organization started by the band in 1990. Although the Single Club will be removed, the club looks like it will still provide Pearl Jam diehards with exclusives such as merchandise and fan club only ticket presales. Pearl Jam has been active involving their fans in their work since their foundation. Additionally, the band continues to work with fans to give back to the community through their charity, The Vitalogy Foundation.
Pearl Jam has been a large force in the rock community since the 1990s. Hopefully discontinuing one of their fan favorite traditions will not change that. The band has not released a full length record since 2013, but still continues to tour. This includes some large hometown shows in Seattle earlier this year. Maybe in 2019 Pearl Jam will find new ways to provide fans with exclusive content. Or even better, maybe a new album is on the horizon.
