Julia Michaels is the poster child for songwriter turned full-on pop star. With Inner Monologue Part 1 being Michaels’ fourth EP, she is not shy to the spotlight. Penning tracks and collaborating with Justin Bieber and Shawn Mendes helped launch her stardom. The “Issues” singer releases her most personal work yet on this EP with each track telling a wickedly raw story.
When the tracklist was released, a duet with pal Selena Gomez titled “Anxiety” took the opening spot. Fans were eager to see what this song would entail. The two tell a strongly relatable story about the struggles with anxiety and dealing with everyday pressures. It has been a while since we heard from Miss Gomez, and it was refreshing to hear her voice again. What follows are songs detailing heartbreak, mental health, and relationships. Michaels’ words are profound and offer deep and personal insight. These are more than just songs; they can sincerely help others due to how relatable they are.
“I wish we didn’t have so many friends in common // So many birthdays that I missed so I don’t run right into you // Even though that’s what I wanna do,” sings Michaels on “Into You.” Phew, talk about a “been there, done that” kind of feeling from those lyrics. We also get a duet with Niall Horan on “What A Time,” and their styles are the perfect acoustic blend. Overall, the EP is yet another strong piece from Michaels. Her impressive lyrics and vocals are the spotlight as she delivers a sad yet extremely real piece of art.
Michaels also announced a tour, so make sure to get tickets to see the songstress live!
