DJ and producer Kyrre Gørvell-Dahll, known to his fans as KYGO, released his first hit of 2019, titled “Think About You.” Featuring Valerie Broussard, the song uses low-key verses paired with an upbeat piano chorus to tie together what had the potential to be the best song that was dropped this past Valentine’s Day.
Broussard recently signed to the DJ’s Palm Tree Records, and her voice fits perfectly with the instrumentals he has produced. The song, however, was a predictable one for the DJ. Being named Spotify’s Breakout Artist of 2015, it might be time for the artist to branch out into new beats and experimentation with his sound.
Then again, why fix something that’s not broken? KYGO has been presented with huge success in the last few years, with his songs reaching millions of fans. For him, there may not be a need to try something new — especially if he’s good at what he does and if fans continue to listen despite releasing similar sounding stuff.
“Think About You” definitely still holds its own in the musician’s discography, even if it’s not all that unique to what he’s released in the past. The artist has worked with big names like Ellie Goulding, Selena Gomez, John Legend, Imagine Dragons, OneRepublic and Julia Michaels, so bringing in the new female singer’s voice gives the song a unique edge that the others lack.
The lyrics are also very moving. The chorus says, “I cut the tree down that we grew // You know, the one we carved our name into? // Still I can’t go back to the places we knew // ‘Cause they ask me if I still think about you // Only all the time.”
Honestly, who can’t relate to those deep cutting lyrics? We all have that special someone who we think of as the “one that got away,” and KYGO and Broussard successfully get fans to latch onto that feeling in the song. Somehow, they’ve also been able to turn this heartbreaking concept into a song perfect for clubbing, which is truly impressive.
With this single comes the promise of more new music. Make sure you’re watching out for more releases from KYGO, and next time you have a night out, keep your ears open for “Think About You.”
