JanaeSound is making her way up through hard work, soul and passion. Lucky for us, we got a chance to talk to the up-and-coming artist about her latest single, “Diamonds.” Promoting power, individuality and strength, JanaeSound is quickly building her career to become a powerhouse in soul and rock. If you want to learn more about her, you’ve come to the right place.

Can you tell us a little about your single “Diamonds?”

Sure! Diamonds is an uplifting rock ballad. It’s about continuing to fight for your dreams and remaining faithful to your purpose even when the bad outweighs the good and it makes sense to quit. I felt failure when I wrote this tune. I hope anyone who is feeling alone or defeated feels encouraged after hearing this song.

You’re a St. Louis native, how was growing up there and the music scene?

I was really lucky to find my place in music at a young age [nine] through the Opera Theatre St. Louis. I also sang in church, and in my teens I started to collaborate with local rappers. The last one stuck. I love collaborating with rap artists. Some of my current favorites are Chris Grindz, Allen Gates, Bo Dean and Mvstermind. I have quite a few projects in the works with some STL friends. I’m headed out there again at the end of March.

You really started to love music through the Opera Theatre. Has that had a role in how you make your music now?

When I was really little, maybe around five, my mom and I used to dance together in our living room while blasting Carmen [Habanera]. Then, I became obsessed with watching Carmen Jones [1954] and I fell in LOVE with Dorothy Dandridge. She was so stunning and beautiful and it was really powerful to see that representation at a young age. Four years later, I was blessed to be involved with Opera Theatre.

Who are some of your favorite artists right now?

I am obsessed with Anderson .Paak, who is performing in Maine this summer — YES LAWD. I cannot get enough of Lizzo! Would give up my kidney to work with her.

What’s your dream collaboration?

More like dreams because the list is long. Hmmm… Robert Plant, Heart, Solange, Lizzo, Anderson .Paak, King Princess, Joseph Angel. I’d work with these talented folks in any capacity — perform with them, sing back up for them, write for them. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

You’ve played some pretty cool shows so far, such as opening for Flo Rida, for example. What would be your goal venue or festival to play?

I want to play Coachella, MSG, Red Rocks, Governers Ball, SXSW, Glastonbury and Pitchfork.

In your singles, we see themes of strength and individuality. Is this what you would like to convey to your listeners? What are some takeaways you want your listeners to get from your music?

Thank you! I want my listeners to feel invincible. I hope my music empowers them to dream big and live without fear.

Your Instagram has some awesome photos with your hair. Any tips to get the perfect hair flip?

Thank you so much! Deep condition once a week, limit use of flat irons and blow dryers.

If you could do anything you wanted in a music video for your songs, what would you do?

I’d love to shoot an entire video underwater.

Now that your singles are out, what’s next?

I’ve got more music coming! This year I’m focusing on releasing more visual content and performing in as many new places as I can.
