As the first single of their new album, MUNA definitely put out a statement with, “Number One Fan.” This uplifting track and it’s equally intriguing video touch about self-love and how you can be your biggest “hater.”
The opening line, “So I heard the bad news // Nobody likes me, and I’m gonna die alone,” definitely sets the tone for the track. In an interview with Billboard, the band said that they “wanted to punch everyone in the face a little bit,” with the opening lyric, and that, they definitely did.
The tone by the second verse does a complete 180, “I’m coming for everyone and coming on strong // New hair and new shoes // Yeah, I get what I like because I do what I want,” showing their growth in self-love.
In a recent press release, the band mentioned that the song is, “a song about recognizing the negative voices in your head and learning to speak back to them. It’s a joyful and surprising experience to recognize that, just as we can all be our own biggest haters, we can also decide to be our own biggest fans.”
The visual for the new single fit perfectly. With the lead singer, Katie Gavin, being followed around by a look-a-like who had been studying her every move. It turns out that this duplicate is actually herself whom she grows to accept and love.
