Miley Cyrus has dropped a brand new song, “Slide Away,” in the wake of her split with Liam Hemsworth. The track seems to be an explanation of why their relationship fizzled out, from the “Mother’s Daughter” singer’s perspective.
The 26-year-old singer-songwriter has released several songs about Hemsworth over the last decade of their relationship. The couple has been on-again, off-again for years. Despite this, the two always managed to find their way back to one another and eventually tied the knot last December in a secret ceremony. After less than a year of marriage, however, the two have separated.
The 29-year-old Australian actor made an official statement about the separation on his Instagram. “Hi all,” he wrote. “Just a quick note to say that Miley and I have recently separated and I wish her nothing but health and happiness going forward. This is a private matter and I have not made, nor will I be making, any comments to any journalists or media outlets. Any reported quotes attributed to me are false. Peace and Love.”

Hi all Just a quick note to say that Miley and I have recently separated and I wish her nothing but health and happiness going forward. This is a private matter and I have not made, nor will I be making, any comments to any journalists or media outlets. Any reported quotes attributed to me are false. Peace and Love.
Cyrus also shared an Instagram post about “evolution,” suggesting that she has evolved beyond her relationship. “Don’t fight evolution, because you will never win,” she wrote. “Like the mountain I am standing on top of, which was once under water, connected with Africa, change is inevitable. The Dolomites were not created over night, it was over millions of years that this magnificent beauty was formed. My dad always told me ‘Nature never hurries but it is always on time’…. it fills my heart with peace and hope KNOWING that is true. I was taught to respect the planet and its process and I am committed to doing the same with my own.”
Rumors are swirling as to why the couple separated, but with “Slide Away,” Cyrus has shared her side of the story. In the chorus, she sings, “So won’t you slide away? // Back to the ocean, I’ll go back to the city lights.” In the wake of their split, Hemsworth is currently spending time in Australia by the beach with his family. Meanwhile, the “Wrecking Ball” singer has gone back to the “city lights” of L.A. This contrast in their lifestyles could be a hint at why the relationship fizzled.
The pre-chorus also gives the listener an inside look at another reason why the relationship wasn’t working out. “Move on, we’re not 17,” she sings. “I’m not who I used to be // You say that everything changed // You’re right, we’re grown now.” Because the two fell in love on the set of the movie The Last Song when Cyrus was just 16 years old, they’ve both grown up a lot in the last decade. But perhaps Hemsworth preferred who Miley was years ago and not who she has become more recently.
In both verses, Cyrus sings, “Once upon a time, it was made for us // Woke up one day, it had turned to dust // Baby, we were found, but now we’re lost // So it’s time to let it go,” suggesting that the relationship is too far gone to save and that she needs to let it “slide away.”
“Slide Away’s” lyrics are heartbreaking. But much like the successful “Wrecking Ball,” they offer a very personal look at what Cyrus is feeling. Fans of the singer will likely share the opinion that the more personal Cyrus’s music is, the better it is.
