Bebe Rexha is singing about a real topic on her new single, “Not 20 Anymore.” She tackles the topic of aging out of your twenties as a woman (the singer/songwriter just turned the big 3-0 on August 30).
The 30-year-old “Call You Mine” singer posted on Instagram about this very topic shortly before the track dropped, citing a conversation that she had with a music executive, who said that her “brand was ‘confusing’ … because [she] is a songwriter and posts sexy pics on [her] Instagram and that’s not what female songwriters are supposed to do, especially for [her] age.”
In “Not 20 Anymore” Rexha sings about “aging like a fine wine” and “getting better with time” in addition to loving the way she feels in her skin and her desire to not go back to when she was younger. It’s a powerful, feel-good anthem about aging gracefully and realizing that as you get older, you also get wiser and better at living life.
In the bridge, the singer/songwriter sings, “Why lie ’bout how old I am? / When I’m a better lover than I was in 2010? / Oh, baby, let me show you all the things my body do, yeah / Beauty’s more than a number / When I was younger, I wish I knew that / And now, I’m not afraid, won’t hold myself back.”
The pressure that women face to be beautiful is continuous for women of all ages. The music industry probably doubles (or triples) this pressure and Rexha has taken a stand to say that beauty comes at all ages and is not just found in your twenties. She lets her fans and listeners know that you can feel good in your skin at any age. Having positive messages like this in songs in 2019 is exactly what women (and men!) need to hear more of.
