Lana Del Rey is the embodiment of old Hollywood — big updo hairstyles, winged eyeliner and eerie vocals make her a staple for alternative pop. Before the debut of her fourth album Norman Fucking Rockwell, she released “Doin’ Time,” a cover of Sublime‘s Californian-reggae hit. Along with Lana’s take on the cult-classic, she worked her magic in its accompanying video.
The 34-year-old strides through the streets of Los Angeles as a super-sized version of herself — a nod to the classic 1958 film Attack of the 50 Foot Woman. She confidently wanders over highways and dances throughout the California coast as moviegoers watch her onscreen at a retro-style drive-in theater.
The “Born to Die” singer takes on another role in the video as one of the film’s audience members. She enjoys the company of a handsome date who leaves her for another woman during the night. But the storyline doesn’t end there. Lana’s movie character steps outside of the screen and gets revenge for her audience member self. It’s the ultimate girl-power moment as the pair share a knowing smile before super-sized Lana returns to her alternate movie universe.
“Doin’ Time” captures the essence of Lana’s vintage Cali style — the one we’ve come to know and love since her smash “Video Games.” It’s hard to imagine a world where the singer wasn’t conquering men with the sharp edge of her lyrics and queen-like confidence. “Doin’ Time” is just a continuation of the hazy, dream-like state we endure when we enter Lana’s creative genius. Now with the release of her latest LP, she’s reached a new peak of musical excellence. Her previous albums were just mere warm-ups; Norman Fucking Rockwell is Lana at her all-time best.
