Billie Eilish is donating a portion of her earnings from her performance at the Music Midtown Festival in Atlanta to Planned Parenthood.
Back in April, the Governor of Georgia, Brian Kemp, signed one of the nation’s strictest abortion bills into law for the state. The bill effectively bans abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.
The “Bad Guy” singer posted to her Instagram story about her performance, writing:
Eilish has consistently been a strong supporter of Planned Parenthood and women’s rights. In August, she signed on to Billboard‘s “Band Together, Bans Off” ad, which is part of Planned Parenthood’s #BansOffMyBody campaign. The idea of the campaign is to oppose state abortion bans and attacks on women’s reproductive rights in the United States.
The campaign’s goal is an inspiring one. They want to get half a million signatures on an online petition supporting the cause by January 22, 2020, which is the 47th anniversary of Roe V. Wade (a landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in which the Court ruled that the U.S. Constitution protects a pregnant woman’s liberty to choose to have an abortion without excessive government restriction). All of the artists appeared in a full-page ad in Billboard magazine on Women’s Equality Day (August 26).
The 17-year-old singer/songwriter is one of the younger artists on the list. “I’m proud to be standing up for Planned Parenthood as they fight for fair and equal access to reproductive rights,” she said in a statement to Billboard. “We cannot live freely and move fully in the world when our basic right to access the reproductive health care we need is under attack. Every person deserves the right to control their body, their life, and their future.”
The Music Midtown Festival in Atlanta took place at Piedmont Park this past weekend on September 14 and 15 respectively.
