The second track of Melodrama calls our attention from the first few seconds. The drums commence and Lorde begins professing the standard themes of partying, where moments escalate. Her song tells the tale of a drunken moment with a potential new guy and she ponders if the same chemistry can be experienced if they weren’t drinking.
“We’re King and Queen of the weekend // Ain’t a pill that could touch our rush // But what will we do when we’re sober?” Part II of “Sober,” which rests later on the album, takes a slow approach and stands as a warning for her ex’s wrongdoing. She discusses loneliness and self-image in the hands of others.
