Max Schneider has been on our radars since his early acting days on Nickelodeon, but his music has been taking him to new heights since the release of 2016’s “Lights Down Low.” The New York native recently teamed up with Chromeo for a charming track titled “Checklist” and it’s one of his best collaborations yet.
Canadian duo Chromeo provides Max with funky production work that pairs well with his suave vocals. The song’s energy remains upbeat until the end of the bridge, where most of the instruments are dropped and atmospheric synths sweep Max’s smooth voice into the final chorus. It’s a lively tune punctuated by catchy whistles bound to coax anyone onto the dance floor. Then again, that’s the vibe that the electro-funk producers specialize in.
The cheeky lyrics detail a surprisingly organized type of love where all Max needs is a simple bulleted list to be the best lover possible. There’s also a brief vocabulary lesson, reminding us that “ABC” actually stands for “Attitude,” “Bad as hell” and “Can’t believe I got you all to myself now,” because what else would the letters stand for? Max is known for his affectionate lyrics (usually inspired by his wife of three years, Emily) and that doting facet of his personality is present in “Checklist.”
Max had previously granted us two excellent singles from his upcoming House of Divine album: “Love Me Less” featuring Quinn XCII and “Acid Dreams” featuring Felly. If these three tracks are any indication, Divine could very well end up being the New Yorker’s most remarkable album to date. The trio of singles ensures that Max has pinpointed a sound that complements his style, and we luckily get to enjoy the results.
