Derek Luh’s Single “Hoodie” Lends a Different Perspective on Breakups

Showing us a different look on the breakup blues, Derek Luh talks inspirations behind his newest track “Hoodie.” He also talks to the Soundigest team about how he got started in music and how his sound has transformed into what it is now:

Thanks so much for talking to us today, Derek! And congrats on your new single, “Hoodie!” Can you tell us a little about your background? How did you get into music and when did you know that this is what you wanted to do?

Thank you guys for having me! I started making music six years ago and I started out doing it for fun in my room with a cheap little mic from guitar center and GarageBand. Eventually I ended up releasing my first song and saw the impact it had on people and I knew this was something I wanted to do as a career.

If you had to put your sound into words, how would you describe it?

It’s a fun, anthemic, catchy, indie-pop, laid-back, sing-along experimental vibe. I was going for kinda like a Sublime meets Wes Anderson.

So “Hoodie” seems to be about a breakup; was this the inspiration behind the song?

Yes! This song was based on true events, haha. Actually there is an ex and there is a hoodie that I still have. I might give it to Goodwill honestly.

Your overall sound is super chill and vibe-y. How would you say “Hoodie” differs from your previous tracks?

I think “Hoodie” is a little more vulnerable than all my previous music. For me to put myself out there and basically be groveling at my ex’s feet, begging for her to come back to me or me letting her know I fucked up. I see you’re doing better without me so I just want to tell you that I miss you.

Is there an album or EP in the works?

THE EP IS DONE… It’s been done, actually getting it mixed and mastered as we speak!!

You’ve toured with some big-name artists like MGK and IAMSU! What’s your favorite part of being on stage? And are there any tours or shows coming up?

I honestly love seeing people react to the music live! When you see someone singing your lyrics in person at a show there’s no better feeling.

What can fans look forward to?

I got hella stuff lined up. More videos. More music. An EP and touring!! I’m trying to feed the people.

Anything you’d like to add?

Much love to all my fans! Thank you guys for being so patient. I told you once I started I wouldn’t stop!!!
