Ava Max had a pretty great 2019 and, with the release of latest single “On Somebody,” she’s set to have an even better 2020!
“On Somebody” is a slinky, electro-pop song that deals with getting over someone who’s already moved on. “Heartbreak is a motherfucker,” Max declares in the very first line. In the chorus she ruefully sings, “You never know much you’re on somebody // ‘Til they’re on somebody else.” It’s a feeling we can all relate to; don’t we always want what we can’t have?
What makes this song interesting is the way Max describes the relationship. It may be hard to see her former lover with someone else, but she knows she’s “better off without it.”
Max broke out with the tongue-in-cheek “Sweet But Psycho.” It cracked the Billboard Top 10 in the US. In Europe, the song went No. 1 in the UK, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Norway and Sweden.
In a Rolling Stone interview from May 2019, Max said her debut album was “pretty much done.” She also said she hoped to revive that 2000s-esque pop sound we all know and love with her new music.
“There’s not a lot of pop,” she told Rolling Stone. “I think it’s coming back — not just with my music. I’m obsessed with the pop girls. It’s time to have more of that kind of music.”
“On Somebody” is Max’s sixth official release of 2019, along with “Salt,” “Alone Pt. II,” “Torn” and “Freaking Me Out.” There hasn’t been an official announcement yet, but her debut album is rumored to have a 2020 release date. We can’t wait!
