King Princess Takes the Throne With Hypnotic Hit “Ohio”

Cupid wasn’t the only one who brought out our feels this month. Indie-pop and funk gal known as King Princess (aka Mikaela Mullaney Struas) brought us another sucker punch to the heart with “Ohio.” The 21-year-old Brooklyn, NY native hits all the right notes and chords to bring us into an oasis, demonstrated in her album Cheap Queen, which dropped on Valentine’s Day.

Growing up in a music-heavy household, Struas picked up different instruments and gained her own style. She resembles Sharon Van Etten and the late Dolores O’Riordan of The Cranberries. Her debut came in 2018 with the release of “1950.”

The hypnotic single “Ohio” is about a past romance. King Princess calls out her ex-girlfriend who moved away and asks if she ever thinks about her, recalling the mems they share. The first minute is slow and intimate, as she proclaims to be doing better, “gettin rich” and refusing to wallow in misery. For anyone looking to call out an ex, this is the groove you need to hear! Her repeated clause “So what’s good? Is it me or is it you?” takes the classic break-up line and turns it 360 degrees, setting the tone as an anti-sad, movin’-on track.

She’s defiant and bold for the duration of the song. After the bridge, she flips a switch and incorporates strong guitar chords and drums that are both loud and subdued. She takes the soft, ballad start, makes it rumble and rough and gives it a grunge finish. Well done, King!
