Less of a sweeping ballad and more summer anthem than our first two picks, “Cruel Summer” is easily one of the standouts on Swift’s Lover. The track comes hard and fast as Swift continues to flesh out the feeling she so beautifully captured on “Delicate.” It’s synth-pop at its finest, dripping in desperation and yearning. Also, if that growl at the end of the bridge isn’t a reason to celebrate Alwyn’s birth, then we don’t know what is.
