Kehlani’s latest single, “Toxic,” was released last week with lyrics that explore an unhealthy relationship.
“Tryna make a bad bitch behave, no // I was this way for you,” she sings mournfully over a sparse trap beat. It’s rumored that she gets an assist on the backing vocals from rapper Ty Dolla $ign, but it’s not official. The rest of the lyrics detail how hard it can be to walk away from someone you love, no matter how bad you are for each other.
The pre-chorus describes how easy it can be to backslide to someone you thought was out of your life, especially when there’s alcohol involved: “And that damn Don Julio made me a fool for you // And now I might hit your phone up with that ra-ra-ra // Missin’ my da-da-da, missin’ that ah-ah-ah.”
Fans speculate that this song is about her on-and-off relationship with rapper YG. Kehlani appeared to announce their break-up with her previous single “Valentine’s Day (Shameful).”
“Toxic” is her fourth single this year, following “All Me,” “Change Your Life” and “Valentine’s Day (Shameful).” So far, we have no official announcement of a follow-up to 2019’s While We Wait.
Kehlani’s set to open for Justin Bieber on his upcoming tour, along with Jaden Smith. The tour kicks off May 14 in Seattle, with no word yet if it will be postponed due to coronavirus fears. Fingers crossed that we’ll get to hear this live in the coming months!
