Passenger Combats Social-Distancing Blues With New Single “The Way I That I Love You”
Passenger Gets Personal With New Single “The Way That I Love You”
In troubling times like these, it’s nice to know that we can always rely on music. Passenger released the beautiful ballad “The Way That I Love You” last week after realizing we all need a little something to brighten up the day — even if it’s just for a few minutes.
In a letter posted to Facebook, he said, “I really hope you’re all doing ok and you’re as safe as you can be at this very strange time. I wanted to share a song with you all as I believe that in the darkest of times art and music are more important than ever. I’m usually quite guarded about what I share of my personal life but I feel like I need to tell the story of this song for it to be fully understood … (I’ll keep it brief). It’s called ‘the way that I love you.’ I wrote it a little while ago for my girlfriend. At the time it just felt like a really sweet love song but unfortunately, a few weeks later we ended up breaking up. It was only then that I realized that it wasn’t just a love song but perhaps subconsciously my way of saying goodbye. I hope this song helps anyone who has been through something similar, I hope it comforts you if you can’t be with the people you love at this time.”
The song is a slow, sweet acoustic tune that features guitar, strings, bongos and vocals. The lyrics match the calm tone of the music, with lines about how being and loving yourself is what makes you beautiful.
The line, “Discard what is fake, keep what is real // Pursue what you love, embrace how you feel,” almost feels like some advice for all of us as we self-isolate and social-distance. Clean out your closet, learn a new skill, have a good stress-cry and — of course — listen to new music! It’ll help you stay sane and take your mind off of things for a little bit.
