Music doesn’t stop, fam! Due to the global shutdown, MGMT, the multi-instrumental band from Connecticut, canceled their tour with heavy hearts. Yet, they dropped a new single earlier than expected and announced it on their Instagram. “As You Move Through The World” is the second release on their independent record label (versus their previous label, Columbia Records) and will appear on their upcoming album. Let’s take a look…
This seven-and-a-half-minute instrumental track takes a soothing, humble tone. The melody is cautious and mesmerizing with continuous electro sounds from start to finish. At the two-minute mark, drums tiptoe their way into the song, along with audio that has to be heard with intent, as quiet conversations break in and out like a wave.
Featured on the cover in the music video is a woman dressed in 17th-century clothing against a psychedelic background. It’s an artist touch from MGMT that portrays ideas of both the past and future, and the mesh of the current moment, or present. This is a similar approach to the “In The Afternoon” cover art, which was released in December. These singles are the first pieces of new music since 2018’s Little Dark Age.
The same band that brought us the timeless hits “Electric Feel,” “Time To Pretend” and “Kids” know just how to get millennials in the feels. “As You Move” is a tangent away from their signature style, with chill and earthy vibes, calling our attention to focus on the beats rather than lyrics. It’s a gift while we’re on lockdown and temporarily “not moving through the world” (as written on their Instagram). Thanks to leaders Andrew VanWyngarden, Ben Goldwasser and the rest of the squad for reminding us to hang in there during this difficult time.
Escape for a few moments during our shutdown and take some pointers from MGMT:
