5 Best Songs Written by My Chemical Romance’s Frontman Gerard Way

3. “Cancer”

Probably the saddest song in My Chemical Romance’s discography, “Cancer” is a real tearjerker. Gerard Way once stated that he wanted to write the “darkest song ever,” so he wrote “Cancer.” Off My Chemical Romance’s third studio album, The Black Parade, the song is about someone who is dying of cancer and how sad he feels about leaving his loved ones behind. Way has also described the track as “very direct, very brutal, but that’s the way disease is.”

In 2016, Twenty One Pilots covered “Cancer” for Rock Sound Presents: The Black Parade, a tribute album to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the original album. Luckily, Gerard Way liked it: “I did hear that one, it was great. I was really impressed. I didn’t know what to expect and I was surprised by what I heard.”
