For someone who was not very active on social media before the coronavirus pandemic, quarantine sure has Shawn Mendes warming up to Instagram. This week, the Canadian superstar uploaded two beautiful acoustic covers from his latest album Shawn Mendes: The Album. In addition to playing the fan favorite “Why,” Mendes also performed his hit single “If I Can’t Have You.”
Mendes has already released many different versions of “If I Can’t Have You,” but the acoustic rendition posted on Shawn’s IGTV gathered 4.7 million views in a whopping two days, which — we have to admit — is pretty darn impressive. Changing up the style of the song, Mendes used a Gibson Les Paul CM, which gave the track a more traditional, stripped-down rock style. This new style allowed him to highlight his impeccable vocals. And compared to the original version of the tune, which was released roughly one year ago, this new acoustic take also places an emphasis on his guitar skills.
Unsurprisingly, fans are absolutely loving this slowed-down, guitar-focused version of Mendes’s hit single. And many have even commented about how this acoustic cover is subtle and feels like a calm summer vibe; perfect for ushering in the new season. It’s also been noted that this performance was the first since the start of his quarantine where singer and girlfriend Camila Cabello was not shown in frame.
How do you feel about Shawn’s acoustic cover of “If I Can’t Have You?” Do you like it better than the original, or will be heading back to Spotify to play the OG pop version on repeat? Let us know how you feel in the comments below, or tweet us with your thoughts @soundigest.
