If you’re one of the thousands of Swifties who were totally bummed out when Taylor swift postponed her highly anticipated Lover Fest, then last night was a real treat. On the ABC network, the “Cruel Summer” songstress’ City of Lover concert aired, which was a pre-recorded album release party of sorts that Swift played in Paris not long after the album’s official release.
Swift kicked off the show with an energetic and pastel-covered performance of the LP’s lead single “ME!” But shortly thereafter, the concert shifted to an entirely acoustic show full of some of the most emotional, deep cuts on Lover. “The Archer” was up next, which Swift said “encapsulates the complexity of falling in love” before changing a key lyric from “Who could stay” to “You could stay.” And yes, the crowd — both in Paris and at home in front of their TV sets — went wild.
The hour-long show was far from over, though. After her touching performance of “The Archer,” the pop star went right into an acoustic, guitar-strumming rendition of “Death By a Thousand Cuts” — a song she’d never played live before. She kept that streak going with “Cornelia Street. “I think I actually wrote this song… when I was in the bathtub!” she said, giving some insight as to how and when the ingenious track came about.
Taylor also performed fan favorites “The Man” and “You Need to Calm Down” acoustically. But still, it seemed that Swifties were in agreement that her performance of “Daylight” on the grand piano was the most evocative and bone-chilling of the night. “I don’t wanna look at anything else now that I saw you,” she sang angelically. “I don’t wanna think of anything else now that I thought of you.”
Before saying goodbye, Swift graced fans with one of her most romantic songs to date, as well as the title track of her most recent album. Yep! The pop star performed “Lover” with an enormous grin on her face as the Paris audience passionately sang along. If nothing else, the special was a reminder that while Lover Fest might not being happening this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, Swifties have a lot to look forward to come 2021. And we don’t know about you, but we really can’t wait.
If you missed Swift’s City of Lover concert, you can still catch it. The hour-long show is now streaming on Disney+ and Hulu. You’re welcome![wordads]
