5 Musicans Who Have Urged the Music Industry to Fight Racism

1. Erykah Badu

The singer-songwriter, record producer and actress, Erykah Badu, reshared a powerful statement, reposted by Kelis and originally posted by Josh Kun on Twitter. The statement reads, “If the music industry wants to support Black lives, labels and platforms can start with amending contracts, distributing royalties, diversifying boardrooms, and retroactively paying back all the Black artists, and their families, they have built their empires on.” Erykah’s caption was straightforward — “F*ck you, pay me!” — which is a reference to the iconic film Goodfellas.

Being a black singer, songwriter and producer, Erykah has no doubt experienced being underpaid, undervalued and under-supported in an industry full of white executives. Ekryah is advocating for the music industry to right their wrongs and make extreme structural changes to what goes on behind-the-scenes.
