Trevor Daniel and Selena Gomez Are the Perfect Duo on “Past Life” Remix

Trevor Daniel‘s rise as one of the best new artists of 2020 has been nothing short of spectacular. The Houston native’s breakout single, “Falling,” cracked the Billboard Hot 100’s Top 20 and spawned remixes featuring Blackbear and Summer Walker. With his popularity growing steadily, the 25-year-old enlisted the help of superstar Selena Gomez for an irresistible remix of “Past Life”.

While teasing the collaboration on social media, Gomez spoke fondly of the original version of “Past Life,” which appeared as track No. 9 on Daniel’s debut studio album, Nicotine. “When I heard the song [for] the first time, I loved the fact that it was kinda like a story about all the things that we tend to hold onto and the patterns that we have,” she said in a video posted on Twitter. “I’m very very vocal about my personal experiences. You know, making decisions that maybe aren’t necessarily healthy for me. There’s something kinda serious. It’s really beautiful.”

The “Past Life” remix is every bit as catchy as you’d expect it to be, and Trevor and Selena make a perfect duo. After all, who better than the “Lose You To Love Me” singer to rework a song about letting go of past relationships? While the pair can’t promote the track in person due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, they’ve been active on social networks, providing adorable duet videos on TikTok and a music video in the form of an Instagram Live broadcast with the lyrics appearing as “comments” beneath them. In other words, it’s the most 2020-appropriate marketing strategy one could possibly think of.

Though Trevor Daniel may seem like an overnight success story, the Texan has been carving a path in pop music since he was a teenager producing beats in his bedroom. We already can’t wait to hear his next project, but we’ll gladly appreciate every remix he provides in the meantime — including this one.
