TikTok Star Dixie D’Amelio Wades Through Her Feelings in “Be Happy”

TikTok star Dixie D’Amelio has surely become a well-known name over the past year. Not only has the older D’Amelio ventured into various fields such as acting and modeling, but more recently she has branded herself as a singer with the song “Be Happy.” And while the song has become a hit on TikTok, it may have been for a different reason.

Dixie D’Amelio spent her time participating in the musical aspect of school, such as theater, as a child. The star was in shows such as The Little Mermaid, Cinderella and Aladdin through her school and local community theater, and took voice lessons throughout her childhood. So it has come as no surprise that D’Amelio has released her debut single. The song, at its heart, is a beautiful song. Although the track was not penned by D’Amelio, it was written by Diamond D, Sam DeRosa, Christian Medice and Billy Mann — writers who know how to translate D’Amelio’s feelings into words. The track contains lyrics that vaguely describe how it feels to be sad, leaving the amount of “pain” to be dependent on how the individual relates it to be. Much of the controversy comes from the production of the track. Imagine if Taylor Swift‘s “The Archer” lyrics were produced with the same beats from her single “ME!” And to top it all off, how do you pronounce “bhuye?”

Does it click now? When Dixie D’Amelio released a snippet of “Be Happy” on TikTok, the lyrics were: “But sometimes I don’t wanna be happy // Don’t hold it against me // If I’m down, just leave me there // Let me be sad.” Due to the production of the track, “but” soon turned into “bhuyes,” which has now turned into one of TikTok’s many inside jokes. Coming to D’Amelio’s second TikTok, which refers to the store Justice, many users on the platform began another joke, saying that “Be Happy” was released in the wrong year, due to the production and simplicity of the lyrics. Dixie D’Amelio being the goofy, fun sport she is, started joining in on the joke.

Dixie, regardless of what much of TikTok might have to say, we love “Be Happy.” We also would love an acoustic version of it.
