If you’re looking for a song to brighten up your summer, look no further than Maisie Peters’ new single “Sad Girl Summer.” The title conjures up images of a weepy ballad, but trust us — it’s quite the opposite.
“One of us was married to an ex-marine with a blonde down the block // he said ‘commitment’s scary’ // then he left her alone with a house and a dog,” Peters sings over a bouncing guitar riff. “So she ran to Daddy // and he said ‘That man’s a loser, call your friends up.” Dads always know what to say when boys break their daughters’ hearts.
The catchy chorus proves that Peter heard her father’s message loud and clear. On it, she dishes out advice for other brokenhearted girls. “Take my hand and lose his number,” she sings. “You don’t have to have another sad girl summer.”
The empowering song holds special meaning for Peters because she went through it herself. “I wrote ‘Sad Girl Summer’ at the beginning of summer 2019, which ironically went on to be one of the best summers of my life!” she said of the track. “The song is all about letting go of things and people that aren’t worth your precious time and energy, and celebrating the people in your life that are.”
The music video does a great job of pushing the song’s overarching message. It shows Peters and her friends in their apartments, trying on outfits, doing skincare routines, eating ramen and dancing around as the track plays.
So far, there hasn’t been any talk of a follow-up to Peters’ 2019 EP It’s Your Bed Babe, It’s Your Funeral, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed that this single will be part of a larger project.
