Noah Cyrus recently dropped a chilling cover of Mac Miller‘s “Dunno,” in honor of the late rapper. Cyrus’ choice to take on the emotional Swimming track reminds us just how much of an inspiration Mac was as an artist. Aside from the release of her moving cover, Cyrus encourages listeners to donate to The Pittsburgh Foundation’s Mac Miller Fund.
The 20-year-old singer wrote in a statement that “Mac was such a beautiful and respected artist, and his loss was felt around the world. His legacy lives on through his incredible music. I’m so proud to cover his record ‘Dunno’ and support the Mac Miller Fund in his honor.” The Mac Miller Fund is committed to supporting young musicians in under-served communities, with resources to guide them to their full potential through exploration, expression and community.
When it comes to her stylistic approach, Cyrus thrives, singing emotional ballads that are absolutely perfect for those “sad boy/sad girl hours.” Mac wrote “Dunno” for the purpose of reminiscing on the pure, carefree moments of a gradually decaying relationship. His lyrics are very personal and direct, which makes the song stand out against a majority of cryptic songs on Swimming. Cyrus is best suited for this cover with her warm, soulful vocal execution, which complements the dreamy sonic details of five-time Grammy-nominated production team Triangle Park.
Cyrus shared in one of her Instagram posts that “Dunno” has personally affected her own life as she navigates her youth. She wrote, “This song has been with me and gotten me thru a lot in my life these past few years.” It’s refreshing to know that the legacy of Mac Miller’s music continues to live on nearly two years after his heart-wrenching demise. With the help of the Mac Miller Fund, we can only predict that his impact will reach far beyond this generation, and onto the next.
