Nothing brings peace during times of chaos quite like music. Stevie Nicks, a true living legend, has returned with a new song, “Show Them The Way,” as a form of peaceful protest. Stevie sings of living through hard times before and begging that we find peace once again. The song is only enhanced with the help of Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters on drums. Dave and Stevie always manage to collaborate with some of the coolest people in the industry, so it’s only fitting that they put together this work of art for us.
If anyone has a way with words, it’s desert queen Stevie Nicks. She sings of living through John F. Kennedy‘s presidency and Martin Luther King Jr.‘s fight for justice. She reminds us that we have found peaceful ways to protest in the past that were successful. We have the ability to power through and make a change. “Show Them The Way” is spiritual and powerful.
Stevie saw so much in her lifetime and her strength is transferred through her lyrics. All the metaphors, allusions and nods to the past show that her writing ability hasn’t wavered since her days in Fleetwood Mac.
Musically, Nicks’ beautiful piano melodies mesh well with Grohl’s unwavering drumbeat. The amount of talent in this single is unreal. It moves like a wave flowing between gentle and powerful, while at some points being both. “Show Them The Way” does a great job of making a 6-minute song sound like a story, a lullaby and a power ballad all at once. And undoubtedly, Stevie Nicks’ unmistakable voice only enhances and plays with the instrumentals to bring together the work of art.
In a year where everything feels like chaos, music has found a way to ground us. And when we need to fight for a better world, there is music to tell those stories. Stevie Nicks and Dave Grohl have been the voices and sounds of multiple generations at this point. Therefore, them collaborating to create “Show Them The Way” is a fitting way to bring power and peace to those who feel hopeless. Better days are yet to come, but we have good music to help get us there.
