Halloween was just a few days ago, but our favorite artists are already getting us pumped for the holiday season! Carly Rae Jepsen just released “It’s Not Christmas Till Somebody Cries,” a quirky ode to all of the terrible, wonderful things that happen when your whole family gets together.
“My boyfriend is a vegan, so they fed him fish // My uncle made it worse by talking politics,” Jepsen sings over a bouncing synth beat. “I had a few opinions, might have started a fight, well // it’s not Christmas till somebody cries.”
She goes on to detail arguments, tears and a mishap where “Grandpa ate the gummies we meant to hide.” It’s a perfect description of the chaos that the holidays can bring, and how fun that chaos can be sometimes. “We get emotional, too, I won’t deny it // I used to hide in my room, but now I like it,” Jepsen shrugs, “‘Cause it’s not Christmas till somebody cries.”
“I love the old fashioned movies and the family traditions and the excitement of gifting presents and decorating the tree and and and… my list is endless,” Jepsen said in a press release about the song. “But each year the pressure to have the perfect Christmas always ends in tears… so often emotions run high and expectation versus reality is something I’d like to shed some light on and hopefully some laughs too in the process. So if you are lucky enough to get to be with the ones that matter most to you this year-embrace it! And if things go south just remember, the secret is to sing a little song to survive… that it’s not Christmas till somebody cries!”
So when your family is driving you up the wall and you’re wishing you were anywhere but here, press play on this song and remind yourself: it’s not Christmas (or whatever holiday you might find yourself celebrating) ’till somebody cries!
