After approaching the end of a year that’s felt like an eternity, Tinashe gives us all the best musical surprise we could ask for, her first-ever holiday EP, Comfort & Joy. The release came as a shock to many fans since the singer had just celebrated the one-year anniversary of her first independent album Songs For You. It seems like Tinashe has spent her time quarantine staying productive, aiming to keep fans entertained. The seven-track project includes some of the most iconic Christmas ballads, from Mel Tormé and Bob Well’s 1944 classic “The Christmas Song” to her own rendition of “Last Christmas” by Wham!
Tinashe puts her own spice on these Christmas classics by incorporating relaxed R&B and lo-fi beats with her powerful vocals. One of the most mesmerizing tracks, “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” samples the chorus of the original classic while Tinashe writes in her own verse. She keeps the mood flirty and lighthearted as she sings: “I’m everything that you’ve been wishing for // This was you and me, nobody gotta know // It’s a special secret, wrapped in lace // But I got it written all over my face.”
Perhaps what allows Tinashe to stand out against other holiday EP’s is her ability to seamlessly blend old traditional elements of the classics with a more modern sound. The aesthetic of this project channels all the feels— excitement, love, and nostalgia.
The night of the EP release Tinashe kept it short and sweet tweeting, “SURPRISE! Made a cute lil Christmas EP because I felt like we all could use some Comfort & Joy this year.” Honestly, she knew exactly what we needed, and delivered!
Since the release, fans have been gushing over how much they appreciate the surprise on Twitter…
