Victoria Monet just dropped her first release of 2021, a sultry single called “F.U.C.K.”
The track is a lowkey, R&B ode to casual relationships: “I wanna be a friend you can keep // (F.U.C.K, yeah, a friend you can keep,” she sings in the chorus. She gets even more direct: “I’m just tryna jump your bones // we don’t gotta jump the broom, you know.”
She also shows off her lyrical dexterity with some creative rhymes: “Is your favorite color blue? // ‘cause you’re something like my kryptonite // I think I want you to maybe // meet me at my crib tonight.”
The song is classic Monet, with simple but elegant production and layered harmonies throughout the chorus.
“F.U.C.K.” is a love song for the non-monogamous, when it’s more than a “f.u.c.k.,” they’re a “friend u can keep. I wanted to give that non-binding friendship intimacy an official name,” Monet said in a press release about the song. “The way we see it, if you’re never in a relationship, you technically can never break up. It’s forever fun, it’s playful, it happens. So … F.U.C.K. it!”
This single is Monet’s first release since 2020’s Jaguar. She also wrote songs for Chloe x Halle (“Do It”), Selena Gomez and Blackpink (“Ice Cream”) and Ariana Grande (“34+35,” “Motive,” “My Hair” and more). Monet is also currently pregnant with her first child, due any day now!
Monet has been quietly dropping solo material for the last few years, while continuing to write and produce for bigger stars, but it looks like the general public is finally recognizing her talent!
No word yet on whether this is part of a bigger project, but we’re so excited to see what else Monet will do in 2021!
