2. “Betty”
“Betty,” off of Folklore, became a fan-favorite tune as soon as it came out. The song is part of the trilogy that Swift calls “the teenage love triangle,” which also includes the tracks “Cardigan” and “August.” Alwyn penned the chorus of “Betty,” and he wrote it from the perspective of a teenage boy apologizing to the girl he loves.
“Betty” was the first song Alwyn and Swift wrote together. Swift first heard Alwyn singing the chorus from another room, and she decided to ask him to collaborate. In Swift’s words, “It was a step that we would never have taken [if it wasn’t for quarantine] because why would we have ever written a song together?”
Luckily, they finished the song, and we got a masterpiece. “Betty” is undoubtedly one of the best Taylor Swift songs to date, and Alwyn’s chorus is nothing but brilliant. He truly captured the essence of a teenage boy who’s nervous about getting rejected by the girl he hurt.
