Yoshi Flower Returns With Multi-Single “Faking Sleep” And “Boys Don’t Cry”

Detroit-based newcomer Yoshi Flower had a relatively tame 2020. After taking a breather during one of the most challenging years in recent history, the singer-songwriter is back with a stellar multi-single release. The double dose of music includes an original song titled “Faking Sleep” and a b-side cover of The Cure‘s “Boys Don’t Cry.” Naturally, the genre-bending musician’s comeback is even better than we could’ve imagined.

Yoshi bares it all in the undeniably catchy “Faking Sleep”, stating that the song is about “trying to pretend it’s all OK and keep living.” With the topic of mental health being more prominent than ever, the musician is keen on being as open as possible with fans. “[‘Faking Sleep’] is about reconciling this past year and trying to fall asleep every night with this gas leak of global context seeping into our everyday lives,” he explained. “You just have to go on with things and be optimistic where you can while being a good person.”

The single features one of Yoshi’s best choruses to date, paired with relatable verses that pulls no punches. “There’s addiction and depression in my pedigree // Spent all of yesterday just finally trying to let it be,” he croons in the opening verse. His musical journey has been a stunning one thus far, comprised of heavy-hitting guitar riffs, candid lyrics and a voice that’s so uniquely his. Like many of Yoshi Flower’s past releases, “Faking Sleep” is a concert-ready anthem that we simply can’t wait to hear live.

As an additional treat, the “7 Days” singer paired his latest track with a cover of The Cure’s iconic “Boys Don’t Cry.” Yoshi proves he’s the perfect fit for the dreamy rendition, revitalizing the song with his signature soothing vocals. After covering songs like Lana Del Rey‘s “Video Games” and Lil Uzi Vert‘s “XO Tour Llif3,” it’s safe to say the Detroit native can perform just about anything as long he’s got his guitar on hand.

We’d been dying to hear more of Yoshi Flower’s work since his noteworthy 2019 project Peer Pleasure, and he didn’t disappoint with his multi-single comeback. You can listen to his cover of “Boys Don’t Cry” here and watch the official music video for “Faking Sleep,” directed by Josh Flores, below.
