The rap gods in heaven did their magic!. With the help of DJ Toasty Digital, a perfect mash-up was born. Chicago rapper Kanye West’s 2010 album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy had an interesting spin when mixed with California rapper/poet Kendrick Lamar’s 2012 Good Kid, M.A.A.D City. Both albums were the most-respected and critically acclaimed for the rappers, who provided vivid storytelling and imagery, as well as a range of artistic choices and production. You won’t be disappointed!
This 21-minute masterpiece incorporates Kanye’s rhymes and rhythms with Kendrick’s finesse and poetic clauses. Collaborators and features include Justin Vernon, Gil Scott-Heron, Rihanna, Pusha T, and Black Hippy Freestyle. A sly introduction is a strong opener for the mixtape, set in the year 2050 (big yikes!) where “drought, famine, and extreme weather threaten to end human civilization as we know it,” and where “Kanye West has been missing for 30 years.”
One of the standouts include “M.A.A.D World,” which is draped over a low-fi piano beat, and “Runaway,” which was a showstopper on West’s album, getting a re-do with Lamar’s ambition. In addition, “Money Power” and “Dead Poets” (ft. Rihanna) are stripped down and offer new-wave energy.
Last June, Good Kid, M.A.A.D City officially became the longest-charting hip-hop album in US chart history after surpassing 400 weeks on the Billboard 100. In January, Top Dawg Entertainment president Punch may have hinted that new music from Lamar is in the works (yes please!) The rapper hasn’t released an album since 2017’s Damn. with his only new music since appearing on the Black Panther soundtrack.
Meanwhile, West has released JESUS IS KING in 2019 and “Nah Nah Nah” in 2020. His ex-wife, Kim Kardashian, has recently filed for divorce.
Since being uploaded on February 21, the music has received over 350,000 views on Youtube. Take a listen and prepare to be blown away!
