Dirty Shirleys and Bops on Bops: a Summer 2022 Playlist

July is here, so it’s time to get this summer started with some of the best bops for your friend’s pre-game, for your night of Dirty Shirleys, your bedroom jam session, or your Grammy Award winning vocal performance on your way to work! Here are 10 of the 60-something best jams for this summer!

1. Tiesto & Charli XCX – “Hot In It”

We can always expect that Tiesto will give us something to bop to — just look at “The Motto (feat. Ava Max)”. This time, Tiesto teamed up with hyper-pop princess Charli XCX to give us a TikTok-friendly smash hit.

2. MUNA – “What I Want”

Over the past couple of years, we’ve seen a shift towards “purposeful pop” – songs typically within a political or social context. MUNA’s “What I Want” brings us back to the days of songs just about having a good time and talking about simply wanting to “dance in a gay bar” – something all of us could use.

3. Beyoncé – “Break My Soul”

Queen B is back, and you will not break her soul. I’ll let the song speak for itself, but once again, it is simply not in her DNA to disappoint.

4. Rina Sawayama – “Catch Me In The Air”

Rina Sawayama has become a household name within the LGBTIQ+ community, delivering powerful vocal chops and melodies that are inspired by the likes of Christina Aguilera, and most notably, her inspiration – Lady Gaga. Rina’s “Catch Me In The Air” teleports us back to the 2000’s with a bright chorus reminiscent of Gaga’s “The Edge of Glory.”

5. Halsey – “So Good”

Halsey’s artistry is truly remarkable – they thrive on evolution and have taken us on a journey throughout BADLANDS and Hopeless Fountain Kingdom – we’ve experienced the colorful chaos that was Manic, and most recently, a theatrical experience entitled If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power. For this summer, Halsey has given us an inside look into a friendship that just missed the mark of blossoming into a relationship.

6. FLETCHER – “Her Body is Bible”

Pride month may be over, but that will not us from celebrating every different form of love. Fletcher is back with an absolute pop smash that compares her lover’s body to heaven, describing it as the only heaven that she’ll know.

7. COBRAH – “Brand New Bitch”

Upon discovering this song, I saw the title and knew I was going to love it. My instincts were correct, as this is the best song to have blasting while putting on something from the Fenty collection and taking selfies in front of your vanity. Just trust me on this one – this song is a BOP and you are going to feel powerful.

8. MUNA – “Sometimes”

As the world’s biggest Britney Spears fan, I was ecstatic to learn that MUNA had recorded a cover for the Hulu exclusive Fire Island. As with “What I Want,” they most certainly did not disappoint! This 2022 twist on the 1999 classic is sure to get the millennial crowd excited with that catchy and familiar chorus.

9. Tove Lo – “No One Dies From Love (220 Kid REMIX)”

Tove Lo has never let us down – whether it be with the radio classic “Talking Body” or the dark electronic sound of “How Long,” she is just unstoppable. Pair that with a fun remix, and you’ll be ready to take on the dancefloor.

10. Charli XCX – “Constant Repeat”

Finishing off this list with where we started feels right – which is why I’m shining the spotlight on Charli’s “Constant Repeat.” This absolute earworm has been stuck in my head since release, so it’s only natural that it be part of the lineup. Just as the title suggests, be prepared to have it on constant repeat.

Did you like this lineup? Check out the full playlist on Spotify, give it a follow, and enjoy as I add more bops throughout the summertime!
