Paramore have shared “C’est Comme Ça,” the third single off their upcoming album This Is Why, out on February 10. The song title translates to “It’s Like That,” and the track’s main theme is adjusting to a life free of chaos.
In a statement, lead singer Hayley Williams stated, “I’m trying to get un-addicted to a survival narrative. The idea of imminent doom is less catastrophic to me than not knowing anything about the future or my part in it. The guys and I are all in much more stable places in our lives than ever before, and, somehow, that is harder for me to adjust to.”
For many people, being in a safe place in their lives — having a stable job, a happy family life, etc. — is scary. When you need disorder in order to live, it becomes difficult to accept stability. Paramore express this feeling in lyrics like, “I run on spite and sweet revenge. It’s my dependence on the friction that really hinders my progression.” Similarly, lack of chaos in one’s life means there isn’t room for visible improvement. “I hate to admit getting better is boring, but the high cost of chaos, who can afford it?,” Williams sings in the bridge.
Definitely, “C’est Comme Ça” is the perfect Paramore song. Always open to change, the band has won their spot in the music scene thanks to their constant evolution and exploration of sounds. Sonically, “C’est Comme Ça” is pretty interesting. Drawing elements from horror punk in the verses, this song is probably not for everybody, but that’s exactly the point. All the three singles released so far sound very different from one another, but they also flow perfectly together. “C’est Comme Ça” is an energetic song, and it will sound incredible live. The chorus and the bridge sound like straight out of a 1990s riot grrrl track, and Hayley steals the show with her voice.
Clearly, This Is Why will be an album full of great, innovative songs made for different kinds of people, and we can’t wait to listen to it in its entirety. Paramore will be touring the US, Europe, and South America from February through August. You can get tickets here, and remember to check out the lyric video for “C’est Comme Ça” below.
